Top 10 Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In Right Now

As the Fed begins its two-day meeting this morning, investors can only sit and wait until the proceedings are over and we get to hear what they discussed from Ben Bernanke later in the week. Many investors have concerns about interest rates rising, the future of the Fed's bond-buying program, and where the committee sees the economy moving. The uncertainty and fear has led investors to sell this morning, and as of 11:45 a.m. EDT, the markets are mixed.

All three of the indexes were in the red earlier this morning, but turned themselves around about an hour ago -- currently only the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is lower. The blue chip stock index is down by 0.06% or 9.55 points, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaqare both higher, by 0.03% and 0.26%, respectively.

Shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) are moving higher by 2.05% as the company prepares for a bond sale in the future. Moody's has already given Apple's debt a Aa1 rating, while S&P gave it an AA+ rating -- both are the second-highest ratings each company gives. While Apple has not officially revealed an amount, it is expected that the offering will be for roughly $15 billion to $16 billion.

So when you first hear about employees attending McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) Hamburger University or Starbucks staffers taking Barista Basics courses and earning college credits for it, you'd be forgiven for thinking they're the educational equivalent of cotton candy: a fun snack but hardly fulfilling.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Other large-cap stocks didn't do quite so well over the last year but could see their fortunes change in years to come. Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) , for example, gained 5% and yields 4.1%. With domestic tobacco companies challenged by tightening regulations, rising taxes, and a shrinking smoking base, many have assumed that Philip Morris is the best bet in tobacco. But in the third quarter, it posted the weakest results, with volume taking a sizable drop and a strong dollar reducing its earnings. Bulls like its innovation and share buybacks.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As the world's second largest tobacco company, Philip Morris International (PM) is the prototypical sin stock. It boasts recognizable brands, a sticky customer base, and a hefty dividend payout -- and the payout looks due for a dividend hike. As I write, Philip Morris International currently pays out a 85 cents each quarter, adding up to a 4.05% yield.

Philip Morris owns almost 30% of the world's tobacco market. And much of that success is thanks to a single iconic brand: Marlboro. The firm has owned Marlboro (as well as second-tier names such as L&M and Parliament) internationally ever since Altria (MO) split up its international and domestic operations. Between the two markets, PM owns the more attractive franchise by far. After all, the international market is the only one that's actually growing.

While the U.S. market for tobacco products is rife with regulation and demographic shifts are turning away from smoking, international tobacco sales are up -- especially in emerging markets. Premium positioning in markets like India, China and Indonesia translates into substantial cash flows for PM investors. And while the strength of the dollar has been a challenge post-2008, the potential for a Fed taper could strengthen this stock's payout in 2013.

  • [By Efficient Alpha]

Philip Morris International (PM) is a favorite of mine, not only for its 4% dividend but also for its protection against global inflationary pressures. The company can pass through higher commodity prices and smokers will keep coming back for more. The company has 16% of the international market and is making strong progress in China. Asia accounts for 36% of sales, followed by the EMEA region (27%), the EU (26%) and Latin America/Canada (11%). Shares have posted an annual return of 15% since its spinoff in 2008.

    Philip Morris International (PM)

Among our holdings, Philip Morris is arguably the most exposed to depreciating emerging market currencies, since it doesn have any US sales. Unfortunately, currency fluctuations are an unavoidable tradeoff for emerging marketsrelatively stable cigarette volumes.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tim Beyers]

Shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) stock may be off more than 20% over the past year, but as far as BrandZ is concerned, nothing has changed. The iEmpire, at $185 billion, once again ranks at the top of the firm's list of the most valuable brands.

Apple topped a list that named three tech companies in the top five. Googleranked second at $113.7 billion followed closely by IBMat $112.5 billion. McDonald'sand Warren Buffett favorite Coca-Cola rounded out the top 5.

Samsung ranked 30th but also gained more, up 51% to $21 billion, BrandZ said in a press release. The message? Samsung's efforts in phablets are paying off. On the other hand, Apple still stands out in tablets and looks best positioned to change the way we interact with televised content, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova in the following video. That's enough to keep the Mac maker in the top spot, Tim says.

Advisors' Opinion:

Remember, last September, Alcoa (AA), Bank of America (BAC) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) were bumped from the blue-chip index, and replaced by Visa (V), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Nike (NKE). So how did that work out? Not so well, as this chart from Bespoke shows:

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

It been a good week for Visa(V) andMasterCard(MA)wo days in and theye enjoyed two rounds of upgrades.

Today, the bullishness comes from Janney Montgomery Scott Thomas McCrohan and Leonard DeProspo, who boosted their ratings on both names to Buy.

For Visa, the upgrade came with a target price increase from $210 to $240 and they write that the recent selloff in the name provides an attractive entry point o own one of the better business models in payments. They count the company powerful network, worldwide brand, and its role in influencing payment standards among its core strengths, and note that the increase of mobile payments has also served to increase the number of places where Visa is accepted.

They write that strong margin expansion in the past year and a half means that mid-to-high teens earnings per share growth is possible even if margins contract this quarter and next, as the company guidance suggests.

    More thoughts below:

Changes to FANF fees beginning April 1, 2015. Last week, Visa modified its FANF pricing (Fixed Acquirer Network Fee) to include a 15 bps volume-based charge for sub-merchants of payment aggregators. Previously, payment aggregators only paid one lump sum payment of $40,000 per month, which created a cost advantage for aggregators versus traditional acquirers and ISOs that were required to pay a separate FANF fee per merchant location. The new FANF pricing is 15 bps of monthly volume, which translates into $30 million of incremental high-margin fee income for Visa based on $20 billion of aggregator volume.

Fiscal 2014 EPS guidance achievable. First quarter margins of 65.8% were a record, and were 230 bps above the previous record (FQ1-2012). FY 2014 EPS guidance calls for mid-to-high teen growth but assumes higher operating expense in 2Q and 3Q and ongoing F/X headwinds from current turmoil in emerging markets. Mid-to-high teen EPS growth appears reasonable gi

Another example of such a product is Colgate-Palmolive (CL)'s Colgate toothpaste. I do not think I have to elaborate much here. Toothpaste is needed in our everyday life, and we will definitely have to buy more toothpaste after we have finished using a packet of it, ensuring that Colgate gets more and more sales over the years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Investometrica]

If there is a reason I hear a lot for investing in IBM (IBM) nowadays, it is the popular 'argument from authority' fallacy: "Warren Buffett owns 67 million shares. Therefore I should own the stock."

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) has posted a weaker climb of 2.7%, but given its dominance of the Dow, it actually had a greater positive impact on the average than UnitedHealth. Ahead of IBM's quarterly report, many investors had feared that a slowdown in IT consulting activity reported by IBM competitors would hurt Big Blue's results, and that trend played a role in the company's 17% drop in earnings on about 3% lower revenue. But the company managed to improve its margins by more than a full percentage point, making the most of its waning revenue. Moreover, raising its guidance for full-year operating earnings by $0.20 per share helped make IBM investors more enthusiastic about the prospects for the company's big-data efforts and other growth initiatives.

Wendy Maeda/The Boston Globe via Getty Images NEW YORK -- Walgreen is moving 120,000 employees to a private health insurance exchange from coverage provided directly from carriers, the company will announce Wednesday. The pharmacy chain will join 17 other large employers on the Aon Hewitt Corporate Health Exchange as part of a growing movement to offer employees fixed dollar amounts to purchase their own plans on such exchanges. The end-cost to employees depends on the plan chosen, but they typically get more options than under traditional arrangements. Private exchanges mimic the coverage mandated as part of the Affordable Care Act. Enrollment in the public exchanges starts Oct. 1. "What happens to employer contributions over time? Will they put in as much as they put in the past? These are unanswered questions but potential negatives," says Paul Fronstin, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute. The benefit to Walgreen and other employers is unknown at this point, as their cost-savings aren't clear. Of the 180,000 Walgreen (WAG) employees eligible for health care insurance, 120,000 opted for coverage for themselves and 40,000 family members. Another 60,000 employees, many of them working part-time, weren't eligible for health insurance. Aon Hewitt (AON) says other participants in its program include retailer Sears Holding (SHLD) and Darden Restaurants (DRI). These new additions raise enrollment to 330,000 from 100,000 last year, and Aon Hewitt estimates enrollment will jump to 600,000 next year, a fivefold increase from 2012. By 2017, nearly 20 percent of employees nationwide could get their health insurance through a private exchange, according to Accenture Research (ACN). A recent report by the National Business Group on Health said that 30 percent of large employers are considering moving active employees to exchanges by 2015. Other major providers of private exchanges include Mercer, a division of Marsh & Mc

Results for third-quarter 2013 were above estimations regarding earnings, but below average in revenue. The challenges presented by the European market, plus the inactive IT spending have affected the firm revenues. A restructuring plan is on track, with the recent divestment of Changepoint, Professional Services and Uniface business units for $112.0 million in cash to M4 Global Solutions Holding B.V. during Jan 2014. These efforts are directed towards enhancing the core business over the long run, developing an innovative product pipeline at reduced costs to boost profitability. Nevertheless, the company faces intense competition from peers such as International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), BMC Software, Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ), Accenture plc (ACN), and Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

    Chevron (NYSE: CVX  )
Although I believe most of Chevron's growth will come from natural gas assets in Australia and Asia, the company owns more than 500,000 bpd of refining capacity from the two largest refineries in California. That could provide a sleeper growth opportunity if the United States ever chooses to develop the Monterey shale in the central and southern parts of the state. Recent estimates peg the total reserves in the formation as high as 15.4 billion barrels -- twice that of the Bakken. There are serious water and environmental concerns that are lacking solutions at the moment, but the formation would be a big boon to refiners on the West Coast. Aside from potentially lowering gasoline prices for drivers in the region, the influx in cheap oil would certainly attract Asian countries that have fallen over each other to get to Canada's land-locked oil sands. The margins on Monterey exports could be huge, depending on recovery economics and oil quality.
