Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) is expected to announce its third-quarter 2013 financial results onOct. 16, 2013. The announcement will be followed by a live webcast of the earnings conference call at8 a.m.Central time (9 a.m.Eastern).
The quarterly results come at a time when investors are wondering whether Abbott was correct in spinning off its strong drug business into a entity called AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV).
These concerns make sense as the remaining businesses of Abbott, including devices, diagnostics, generics and nutrition businesses, has struggled to post solid revenue growth.
Wall Street expects Abbott to earn 51 cents a share, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. The consensus estimate implies an increase of 21.4 percent from 42 cents a share in the same quarter last year.

Mohave County, Arizona Property
The mineral property consists of approximately 1.4 square miles of land located in the northern Black Mountains in Mohave County, Arizona, approximately 56 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada, and 22 miles south of the Hoover Dam on United States Highway 93 (the Black Mountains Property). These features include the somewhat arch-like, cross-sectional (east-west) profile of this area of the Black Mountains, detached cover rocks, a preponderance of shallow-dipping penetrative structures (foliations) in the plutonic/metamorphic basement, and the composition of the plutonic rocks. The Company exploration efforts are primarily focused on the establishment of gold reserves with a seco! ndary focus on copper and other minerals. VNR is one of 14 companies/partnerships that are categorized as exploration and production, or pstream.Other notable entries in this category include BreitBurn Energy Partners (Nasdaq: BBEP), Linn Energy (Nasdaq: LINE), Memorial Production Partners (Nasdaq: MEMP), QR Energy (NYSE: QRE), Legacy Reserves (Nasdaq: LGCY), EV Energy Partners (Nasdaq: EVEP), and Mid-Con Energy Partners (Nasdaq: MCEP).

3. QR Energy (NYSE: QRE ) -- 11.7% yield
QR Energy is an exploration and production MLP, focused on developing mature assets in five different oil- and gas-producing regions stretching from the Permian Basin up to central Michigan. It's a small operation, with reserves of 99.1 million barrels of oil equivalent to its name. - [By Robert Rapier]
While I still think LRE units are undervalued, BreitBurn Energy Partners probably presents a more compelling case at present.
QR Energy (NYSE: QRE) reported a solid third quarter, with earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) up 13 percent to $69 million. Production was up 5 percent despite a disruption at some of it operations.
Distributable cash flow for the quarter was up 26 percent to $35 million, or $0.54 per unit, adequately covering its current distribution of $0.4875. (The partnership will convert to monthly distributions in 2014.) Based on Friday’s close, this translates into an annualized yield of 11.8 percent. Given that QRE’s solid performance came despite temporary production issues, it looks like a decent bet in the upstream MLP space for 2014.

Heading into last night’s earnings report, O’Reilly had returned 50% this year including reinvested dividends, easily besting peers Autozone (AZO), which had returned 22%, Genuine Parts (GPC), which has returned 26%, and Advance Auto Parts (AAP), which had returned 38%, thanks in large part to a 25% gain in the last month due to its purchase of General Parts International. Clearly, investors thought O’Reilly had something going for it its competitors did not.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
What's interesting, though, is that historically, auto-parts makers are seen as relying on the lack of success among automakers. After all, new cars don't need parts nearly as often as older cars do, and when Ford and GM perform well, their customers don't have to rely as much on Genuine Parts or competitors AutoZone (NYSE: AZO ) and Advance Auto Parts (NYSE: AAP ) for replacements. Yet, even though Advance's 15% gain, and AutoZone's 20% rise year to date, aren't quite as substantial as Genuine Parts, they still signal a paradigm shift in the way investors look at the industry, perhaps recognizing that for every new car sold, there's usually a used car that gets traded in, and so good news for Ford and GM sales might actually translate into more business for the parts industry.
Top Diversified Bank Stocks To Own For 2014: SPDR S&P Midcap 400 ETF (MDY)
MidCap SPDRS, Standard & Poor's Depository Receipts, represent ownership interests in the MidCap SPDR Trust, Series 1 (the Trust), which is a unit investment trust that seeks to match the total return of the Standard & Poor's Midcap 400 Composite Price Index (the S&P MidCap Index). To accomplish this, the Trust utilizes a full replication approach.
The Trust's holdings comprise 400 stocks in the S&P MidCap 400 Index, which is designed to capture the price performance of the middle capitalization segment of the United States publicly traded stock market. All 400 securities of the S&P MidCap 400 Index are owned by the Trust in their approximate market capitalization weight.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Where the best gains are
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY ) weighs in with 20% gains with its exposure to 500 of the largest companies in the U.S. market. When you step down to mid-cap stocks, though, you'll get even better returns, with the SPDR S&P MidCap 400 ETF (NYSEMKT: MDY ) posting returns of 21% so far in 2013, based on the performance of 400 mid-sized companies domestically. The smallest companies in the market have done better still, as the SPDR S&P SmallCap 600 ETF (NYSEMKT: SLY ) has given investors impressive 24% returns since Jan. 1.
In fact, when you compare returns across stocks of various sizes, you'll get some surprising results:Why are smaller companies outperforming the largest stocks in the market? Historically, smaller stocks have posted better long-term returns than their larger counterparts, with theoreticians pointing to the greater risk involved in small-cap stocks as justifying the higher risk premium that investors should demand in order to hold them over the long run.
- [By Dan Caplinger]
Similarly, diversification within stocks didn't work well. The performance of iShares Russell 2000 (NYSEMKT: IWM ) and SPDR S&P MidCap 400 (NYSEMKT: MDY ) showed that there wasn't shelter available in small- and mid-cap stocks. International stocks often help protect against losses, but massive capital flight from emerging markets socked popular ETFs Vanguard Emerging Market (NYSEMKT: VWO ) and iShares MSCI Emerging Markets (NYSEMKT: EEM ) for single-day percentage losses that were nearly double the Dow's decline. Even developed markets suffered more than the U.S., as iShares MSCI EAFE (NYSEMKT: EFA ) posted losses 50% greater than the U.S. market's.
